Named in honor of our beloved Cindy Lou, the mission of Cindy Lou’s Sanctuary is to rescue and provide sanctuary as a loving and safe home for Dachshunds and other small breeds.

When possible we arrange adoptions to forever homes, but we are always committed to each one’s lifelong emotional and physical care.

Last night my foster was leash walking two of our babies, June Bug and Shadow when an unleashed, unfenced, unsupervised German shepherd came across the street and attacked. We are very lucky it was not worse. Both dogs are ok and foster was not injured. I want to thank officer Kiemele who came and helped, a big thanks to Island Pet Urgent Care who took great care of them so late last night and of course a big thanks to The Animal Hospital of North Charleston where we are currently doing follow up with Shadow who has the worse of the injuries. Please keep you dogs (of any size ) leashed or fenced and supervised – so many little lives depend on it! See MoreSee Less

I say often and truthfully that I cannot do this without all of you, supporters, donors, adopters, volunteers. Tonight I want to say an extra thank you to one of our volunteers who has one of the most giving hearts I know. She is one of the regular day time crew, and this past week when my other crew was on vacay she showed up every weekday to help take care of the dogs. She does so much of the unglory work – cleaning crates, mopping, getting dogs in and out, folding laundry, so much of the day to day stuff. But she also helps at events, and sews collar tags, and runs our sales table, and when she’s not volunteering for us, she’s volunteer testing for things like Friends of Berkeley County Animal Center low cost clinic days! She also helps transport our crew to our surgery partner, and is up for pretty much anything! She is truly special and we are blessed to have her as a core volunteer on our team. She adopted Bug from us and is currently fostering Champ. And the little dog in the picture? That’s Jaspar, her favorite at the sanctuary (included just for fun- he’s going to his furever family soon!) Patty, thank you for everything you do! See MoreSee Less

Everyone who knows me, knows my heart is firmly rooted in loving and caring for senior dogs, taking care of the tiniest, oldest, sickest of our beloved fur babies – this is most certainly true. When I close my eyes and imagine my sanctuary it’s full of super seniors, down dogs, so many frosty faces – all enjoying the sunshine and love. Then I open my eyes and realize that god must be the ultimate comedian or prankster. It has happened again. I got a call, puppies and a momma in desperate need. Strays in a high risk shelter – puppies at risk- too young to be exposed – can you help. Deep breath, mental gymnastics, and yes – I’ll come in the morning. Still dark, heading out, puppies secure, back to the sanctuary. 7 stinky puppies. 9 weeks old, 3-4 pounds each, big wormy bellies, they have had their first baths and dewormer, dinner and are tucked in bed. Momma is a dachshund mix (looks chiweenie) who will be coming next week after she has medical. Thanks to the folks who sent puppy food today- we are going to need lots of it!!!
We have it listed on our Amazon wishlist pinned at the top of our page – if you want to buy some and send it from somewhere else – we use Hills Science Puppy Small Bites dry kibble
I’m so lucky to be able to say yes to these little lives – thank you all for making that possible!

Yesterday these two sweet babies came to our care from an owner going into care. The daughter reached out to us earlier this week and we said yes. They are 15 and 16 and need immediate care. Thanks to Brittin Danyail Padgett and PetCare Animal Hospital of Newberry they are spending some time there and getting the care they need before coming to us. If you would like to help with a donation we would so thankful! If you would like to foster please send me a message!

Yesterday we joyfully welcomed this sweet little boy to the sanctuary. He was found on a mountain completely matted and emaciated, taken to a shelter we work with regularly and they made a call to see if we could help. One look at that face and my heart melted. Thanks to shelter volunteer Jacqueline and our volunteer and foster Jennifer we were able to transport him to the sanctuary Today we got him straight to our wonderful vet, The Animal Hospital of North Charleston. We have a refeeding schedule set up and extra vitamins but this boy has a ways to go. He is currently 9 pounds and Dr D thinks he should probably be
25ish to be a healthy weight. We stopped at Hollywood Feed after for some extra loves and a treat and the wonderful manager, Cathy, said he looks like a Rocky – because he’s a fighter! So welcome to the Sanctuary Rocky! We are all fighting with you and can’t wait to see you bloom!

Yesterday I got one of those calls – there’s a dog who has to leave or he will be euthanized – horrible back story – taken in covered in Matt’s and feces and fleas. Taken directly to local animal er and shaved down and treated, stabilized and then taken to shelter. Very rough shape. I got the call yesterday morning at 10:32 – at 3:00 he had been flown in thanks to Matt at Pilots for Paws and I was rushing him to see our amazing Dr D at The Animal Hospital of North Charleston. He was shaking so hard and very disoriented. Thanks to the team he is doing well, is stable and has started medication to help with his issues. He had a good nights sleep, ate and drank. And walked around the yard a little bit this morning (maybe 15 feet). He came to us a shaggy, but we’ve decided he needs a noble name so we are calling him Franklin Sterling. Welcome to the Sanctuary sweet boy. We love you already. He is a senior and we think a toy poodle mix, big heart murmur, old man neuro issue, horrible teeth, collapsing trachea, just to get started. If you’d like to help you can donate below or send to our Venmo or PayPal. Thanks in advance!

It’s really been a weekend – there must be one heck of a party happening at the rain bow bridge. After getting back to the sanctuary, our sassy Mr Tinker, who had stopped eating on Friday decided it was time for him to join his pals across the bridge. He passed peacefully in my arms, having gotten some special love from Tammy too. He was one of the best crabbiest boys I’ve known. He hated anyone touching his face or feet, he hated his eyes drops and being held too much, he loved being in the sunshine and doing the 💩 dance. We loved you and all your quirks! Run free and happy sweet Tinker ❤️🐾🌈💔 See MoreSee Less

This afternoon I got a call from our amazing foster Maggie Felkers mom. Maggie is away and Winston is failing what do I do? We set up a time to meet- this is what we’ve been expecting since we took this boy in. He came to us with very advanced cancer of the jaw. We didn’t think he’d last a month. Maggie stepped in and said I’d love to fospice him. That was 7 months ago. He had love and joy from Maggie and her mom every single day.
I met Maggie an hour or so later and Winston was already gone, passed peacefully in his bed at home. Loved so well by all who knew him – he was here at the sanctuary for a weekend recently and I’m so glad we had that time to love on him. He will be missed greatly. Fly free across the rainbow bridge until we meet again sweet boy ❤️🐾🌈💔

This morning as I was gathering up the dogs and getting ready for our event I picked up our sweet Gus and carried him inside, he snuggled into me, took a deep breath and crossed the rainbow bridge. He was 17 and had not had adequate care for a long time, we gave him love and sunshine and comfort. But it couldn’t roll back the clock or the damage already done. I loved him for even the short time we had him. A special thanks to Maria Basini for fostering and transporting him to us. Until we meet again at the bridge my sweet boy- run free and happy ❤️🐾🌈💔 See MoreSee Less
